Container Lorry Topples onto Car, Killing Father and Daughter Near Sepanggar Port

A 49-year-old lorry driver was detained after a container fell onto a Toyota Avanza, killing Mohd Jadi Pelbi and his daughter Norfaieza Mohd Jadi in Kota Kinabalu.

Around 6.15 pm yesterday, a Hino container lorry halted beside Jalan Sepanggar to load a container onto its trailer. While the driver was securing the load, the container became unstable and fell to the right, crushing a Toyota Avanza carrying Mohd Jadi Pelbi, 53, and his 24-year-old daughter Norfaieza Mohd Jadi. The impact trapped them inside; firefighters arrived and, after more than three hours of work with two cranes, extricated the car at 9.55 pm.

Medical staff from Likas Hospital declared both victims dead at 9.58 pm, and their bodies were sent to the forensic department of Queen Elizabeth I Hospital. Kota Kinabalu police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrudin Mat Husain confirmed the driver, a 49-year-old, has been detained to aid the investigation, which proceeds under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Authorities have asked anyone with information to contact Inspector Brymenedren Godon.
