Controlled demolition begins on Rahova apartment block after deadly 2025 explosion
Bucharest's City Hall started a controlled demolition of floors 5-8 of the Rahova building damaged by the 2025 blast, as access remains unsafe.
Work has commenced on a controlled demolition of the fifth to eighth floors of the eight-storey apartment block in Rahova, following the October 2025 explosion that claimed three lives and wounded 15. The City Hall of Bucharest explained that the damage to the stairwell and interior apartments makes the area impassable, requiring the demolition to ensure safety. Access to the building will remain prohibited until the whole staircase is reinforced, a decision backed by the State Construction Inspectorate and the Emergency Situations Committee.
Preliminary investigations placed the blast's epicenter at levels five and six, leading authorities to declare the structure uninhabitable. Earlier, the city completed a comprehensive safety assessment of neighboring blocks, producing a 500-page monitoring report.
Why it matters
The demolition is essential to prevent further collapse and to allow safe reconstruction of a building that caused multiple fatalities.
