Convicted murderer arrested after fatal road-rage shooting of Bridgeport grandfather

Jorge "George" Ortiz was taken into custody for the murder of 48-year-old Nelson Batista in a road-rage incident in Bridgeport.

Bridgeport authorities arrested Jorge "George" Ortiz, 57, after a week-long manhunt linked to the fatal road-rage shooting of Nelson Batista, 48, on Oct. 12. Ortiz, previously convicted of a 1992 felony murder and released from parole before the incident, is charged with murder, illegal pistol possession, and carrying a firearm without a permit. Video evidence shows Ortiz following a woman, confronting Batista as he turned his SUV onto a side street, slapping the car, punching the driver, and then struggling for a gun before firing a shot that hit Batista in the chest.

The city's ShotSpotter system recorded the gunfire, and the medical one outlet confirmed the chest wound as the cause of death. Tips from residents, including a cellphone recording, and witness identification led police to Ortiz, who was apprehended after a short foot pursuit.
