Coordinated arson spree ignites buildings across Thailand's southern provinces

More than 50 synchronized arson attacks set fire to government offices, a shop and a vehicle in Thailand's insurgent south, injuring two people.

The Internal Security Operations Command of the Thai military said that more than 50 coordinated arson and incendiary attacks were carried out across the southern border provinces of Thailand on Saturday night. Fires broke out at a local government office building, a convenience store, a stolen vehicle and multiple telecommunication towers, with most incidents reported in Narathiwat and additional ones in Yala and Pattani.

A bomb explosion in Muang district injured two women, and authorities warned residents against handling suspicious objects. An overnight curfew was imposed in Narathiwat and lifted the following morning, with no further attacks reported on Sunday. No organization has stepped forward to claim the attacks, which occur amid a low-level conflict that began in 2004 and has killed over 7,000 people, primarily driven by the Barisan Revolusi Nasional. Recent violence, including a July checkpoint attack that killed five soldiers, has delayed a peace dialogue, while Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul plans a visit to Hat Yai to discuss investment, flood control and security.

Why it matters

The attacks highlight ongoing instability in Thailand's south, threatening security and hindering peace efforts.
