Coordinated assault by five inmates kills L.A. county prisoner at Pelican Bay

California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials said surveillance video captured a coordinated attack by five prisoners. Convicted murderers Joseph W. Morales and Richard Garcia used improvised weapons to strike Lopez and handed them to fellow inmate Estevan Saucedo, who threw the weapons into a garbage can.
Additional participants Jose D. Rodriguez and Freddie G. Sanchez were linked to the killing, though their precise actions were not detailed. Lopez was serving a 29-year term for an assault with a firearm in Los Angeles County. The killing is the 17th homicide in California prisons this year, reflecting a broader surge in inmate violence that has led authorities to tighten security measures.
