Cornell rape allegation victim describes feeling like ‘bait’ as investigators review case

A woman alleging gang rape at a Cornell fraternity told investigators she felt like “bait” while attackers “were like lions,” according to the university’s Title IX investigation documents.

Jane Doe, who sued Cornell University and seven former students, alleges she was given ketamine, marijuana and alcohol before being gang-raped in the Chi Phi fraternity house in October 2024. In a Title IX investigation, she told investigators she “felt like bait” and described the attackers as “like lions,” noting that some men inhaled drugs off her body. The university’s inquiry, spanning 99 pages of a hearing panel report and dozens of witness interviews, found divergent narratives: the accused men disputed the assault, with one claiming a brief “wellness check” and no sexual intent.

The disciplinary panel expelled several students and ordered another to attend a sexual-harassment course and write a prevention proposal. Governor Kathy Hochul, dissatisfied with the local district attorney, named Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor to reopen the criminal case. The lawsuit seeks damages and holds all seven men liable for rape.

Why it matters

The case underscores difficulties in addressing campus sexual assault and could shape university and state legal responses.
