Coroner orders full inquest into schoolboy Harvey Willgoose's murder after missed warnings
A coroner has reversed a prior decision and will hold a full inquest into the 2025 stabbing of 15-year-old Harvey Willgoose at All Saints Catholic High School in Sheffield.
In 2025, 15-year-old Harvey Willgoose was murdered by another student, Mohammed Umar Khan, at All Saints Catholic High School in Sheffield, an event witnessed by other pupils and teachers. Khan, later found guilty of murder and sentenced to a minimum of 16 years, had a record of 130 behavioural incidents, including prior weapons and gang concerns, and had brought knives to school multiple times. An initial inquest opened in February 2025 was adjourned pending the criminal trial, and senior coroner Tanyka Rawden subsequently decided not to resume it.
Following legal arguments from Irwin Mitchell on behalf of the Willgoose family, the coroner reversed that decision, ordering a full inquest to explore missed opportunities to intervene. Harvey's parents welcomed the move, hoping it will clarify safeguarding failures and inform future school policies. No date has been set for the hearing.
Why it matters
The inquest could reveal systemic school safety failures and influence future safeguarding policies.
