Coroner's Court revisits school to clarify layout in Zara Mahathir death inquest

The Coroner's Court conducted a second inspection of SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha to aid the inquest into 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir’s death.

From 10 am to 1.30 pm, the Coroner’s Court made a second site visit to SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha as part of the inquest into the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir. The coroner, deputy public prosecutors and legal representatives of interested parties inspected classrooms, the Design and Technology room, hostel dormitories and hostel toilets to confirm the physical conditions cited in earlier statements. Adult witnesses, including teachers, attended the visit, whereas child witnesses were barred from the proceeding.

The legal team for Zara’s mother, Noraidah Lamat, said the tour helped all parties better understand the school’s layout. The court may request further clarification or additional evidence, and the inquest resumes tomorrow with testimony from Zara’s stepsister Malianah Mahathir, with further sessions scheduled through Oct 23 for other witnesses such as Noraidah and Inspector Wong Yew Zhung.

Why it matters

Understanding the school’s layout is crucial for determining the circumstances surrounding Zara Mahathir’s death.
