Coroner urges ban on Hoover dryer after fatal West Yorkshire house fire

A West Yorkshire coroner has called for a sales ban on a Hoover tumble dryer model after it was linked to a fire that killed a father and his nine-year-old daughter.

In a recent inquest, senior coroner Martin Fleming highlighted the risk posed by the DX C10DCER-80 Hoover condenser tumble dryer after a fire at a Heckmondwike residence killed 38-year-old Sohaib Ahmed and his nine-year-old daughter Manahal. The incident, which occurred on June 8, 2025, left the father and daughter dead from smoke inhalation, while a second daughter survived serious injuries. Fleming noted that over 1.6 million Hoover and Candy dryers could share the same design flaws and urged the Office for Product & Safety Standards to launch a root-cause analysis and suspend sales pending safety checks.

The Office confirmed it shares the coroner’s concerns and has previously asked Haier UK to investigate similar fatalities. Haier Smart Home UK & I Limited responded that the model is no longer manufactured, cites no systemic safety issue, and does not see a need to halt sales, though it will continue monitoring. The coroner’s report calls for broader scrutiny of similar appliances to prevent future deaths.

Why it matters

Potentially unsafe dryers could cause more fatal fires across millions of UK homes.
