Coroner urges NT Police reforms after officer's suicide linked to trauma
A coroner concluded that Senior Constable Michael Deutrom died by suicide after prolonged exposure to job-related trauma, and issued recommendations to improve mental-health support for Northern Territory police.
Senior Constable Michael Deutrom, a well-regarded officer with more than two decades of frontline experience, was discovered dead by his parents on 16 April 2022 after taking his own life while on leave for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. The coroner, Elisabeth Armitage, attributed his suicide to severe mental-health injury caused by cumulative exposure to traumatic incidents, including a 1999 pursuit that left him burned while rescuing a fatality.
She identified gaps in medical diagnosis and intervention, noting that remote officers often work extended shifts without adequate backup. Among her recommendations were compulsory psychological assessments for officers moving to remote posts, a structured psychiatric referral system, and enhanced wellbeing protocols for commanders during periods of high demand or staffing shortages. NT Police Commissioner Martin Dole responded that the force would carefully review the findings and maintain support services for personnel. Helplines such as Lifeline and beyondblue were listed for those affected.
