Corroding WWII Munitions Threaten German Seas with Toxic Contaminants

Aging bombs dumped off Germany’s coast are rusting and releasing toxic chemicals into the North Sea and Baltic, affecting fish, mussels and even whales.

Off Germany’s northern shoreline, millions of tons of conventional weapons from the world wars are slowly corroding, leaching toxic compounds such as TNT into marine ecosystems. Toxicologist Edmund Maser and fisheries ecologist Jörn Scharsack have documented TNT residues in dab fish, with liver tumors appearing in more than half of specimens near dump sites, while mussels show biochemical signs of oxidative damage. The chemicals have also been found in the tissues of two stranded whales, confirming that the pollutants reach apex marine predators.

Although the current levels are too low to endanger human seafood consumers, researchers predict a gradual rise in contamination that could become hazardous in the future. Germany’s response includes experimental floating treatment platforms that can burn recovered munitions at sea, yet with an estimated 1.6 million tons of ordnance, the effort will span decades. Ongoing studies are also exploring whether marine microbes might eventually break down the residues, but physical removal remains the primary strategy.
