Corruption Probe Seizes BNPB Offices After Military Police Assisted Raid
Indonesia's anti-corruption agency raided the disaster agency's headquarters in East Jakarta, sealing offices and detaining officials amid allegations of fund misuse.
On the night of October 13, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) executed a sting operation at the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) headquarters in East Jakarta. The team arrived in two black Toyota Innova cars accompanied by a white vehicle displaying “Military Police,” and entered the building with six civilians and four Indonesian Military (TNI) officers. After a brief inspection, KPK agents sealed multiple offices, notably the office of BNPB chief Lt. Gen. Suharyanto, before leaving an hour later.
The commission held a press briefing on October 16, with Acting Director of Investigations Achmad Taufik Husein confirming coordination with the Military Police Center, which participated because the case also involved serving military members. The operation led to the resignation of Suharyanto as BNPB chief. Two investigators indicated that the involvement of military police was essential due to the alleged misuse of disaster emergency funds by active-duty personnel.
Why it matters
The raid reveals possible corruption in disaster relief funds and shows military involvement in civilian anti-corruption actions.
