Corte dei conti flags unused health funds and delayed exams in Piemonte

The Corte dei conti report finds that a sizable portion of money earmarked to cut waiting lists in Piemonte was not spent and that many priority-deferred examinations were delivered late.

In its 13 October 2026 assessment, the Corte dei conti highlighted that a considerable amount of money intended to accelerate access to care in Piemonte was left unutilised. The audit further revealed that about 25% of examinations classified as priority-deferred were performed beyond the prescribed time limits. Timely provision of urgent (class B) services improved markedly, whereas the proportion of deferred (class D) services delivered on schedule fell.

The body also pointed to incomplete reporting for two quarters in 2022-2023 and inconsistencies in the data submitted by the region. Ambulatory activity rose, with a 4.2% increase in 2024 over the previous year and an 11.7% rise compared with 2019, but the region has not supplied clear figures for weekend and evening sessions. Finally, only 24 procedures were carried out through the internal private-practice pathway, costing roughly €2,000 in total.

Why it matters
