Council of Europe anti-torture panel completes inspection of Moldovan prisons
The Council of Europe’s anti-torture committee finished a visit to Moldova, inspecting several prisons and reviewing compliance with its recommendations.
A delegation of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment visited the Republic of Moldova to evaluate the treatment of detainees. The mission inspected three facilities - Prison No. 2 in Lipcani, Prison No. 6 in Soroca and Prison No. 15 in Cricova - to gauge living standards, health services and adherence to prior CPT recommendations. Led by Hans Wolff, the team included members Ewa Dawidziuk, Tinatin Uplisashvili and Dmytro Yagunov, with logistical support from Petr Hnátík of the CPT Secretariat.
Officials highlighted the importance of meeting international human-rights norms across all inspected sites. After the inspections, the delegation gave preliminary findings to Moldovan officials and will prepare a detailed report, which may be published with the government’s response under Moldova’s usual transparency procedures.
Why it matters
