Count Binface records highest vote share ever for a UK joke candidate

Following Nigel Farage’s departure from Parliament, a by-election was held in Clacton-on-Sea with all mainstream parties abstaining from fielding candidates. The most visible opponent was Count Binface, a satirical figure portrayed by comedian Jonathan Harvey, who garnered nearly 9,500 votes - about 27% of the total - marking the best performance by a traditional comedy candidate in the UK. Farage won comfortably with 22,239 votes, or 63%, but did not attend the result announcement, citing security concerns.

The ballot also featured three Official Monster Raving Loony Party entrants - Nick the Incredible Flying Brick, Baron von Thunderclap and party leader Howling Laud Hope - who together received 61 votes, as well as a candidate from the Everyone is God party and other independents, totaling 34 participants. Binface’s tongue-in-cheek manifesto included a pledge to “cut your taxes and raise everyone else’s.” He noted previous runs against former prime ministers under different guises and hinted at returning should Farage face a parliamentary suspension.
