Coupang services experience major outage, reigniting security worries

Early Friday, Coupang's website, app, food-delivery and streaming platforms went offline, leaving users unable to shop, order meals or watch videos.

Around 1 a.m. on Friday, Coupang's digital ecosystem—including its website, mobile app, Coupang Eats and Coupang Play—suffered a widespread outage that prevented shopping, food-delivery tracking and video streaming. Affected users encountered messages such as "Network connection is not working" and were unable to log in or retrieve account details. The issue quickly sparked a flood of complaints on online forums, with many questioning whether the disruption stemmed from a new hacking attempt, given the company's prior data breach that exposed personal information.

Some customers who reached the company's support center were told the problem stemmed from an internal system error, but no estimate for service restoration was provided. The exact cause, scope and timeline for fixing the outage remain unclear.

Why it matters

The outage disrupts millions of shoppers and raises fresh concerns about the security of South Korea's largest e-commerce platform.
