Struggling with chronic migraines that made flying impossible, a New York couple devised a plan to buy a low-cost house in Sicily as a permanent base. In early 2020 they hired a Sicilian-British couple to scout properties and settled on a sunny, yellow two-bedroom home in Melilli’s historic centre for 57,000 euros, plus a basic kitchen installed for under $1,500. The house, though unfurnished and lacking a kitchen initially, offered a rooftop terrace with sea and Etna views, and a garden of olive, orange and lemon trees.
After a two-month trial stay they fell in love with village life and decided to move permanently, leveraging the husband’s Sicilian citizenship and the national health system. The wife left a two-decade nonprofit fundraising career to start a consulting business, allowing part-time work and a more affordable lifestyle.
