Court denies conditional release for doctor convicted of violent assault
A Budapest court rejected the request to grant conditional freedom to physician Krisztián Bene, citing procedural delays and the need for further expert input.
Budapest's sentencing enforcement judge declined to grant conditional release to Dr. Krisztián Bene, known for the acid attack on his former partner. The victim, Erika Renner, and Bene's lawyer had sought a review of the parole possibility, but the scheduled remote hearing was delayed after Renner was not informed within the legally required 30-day period. Court spokesperson József Szabó said further expert analysis and an environmental assessment are needed.
The Prison Command (BvOP) acknowledged the notification lapse, apologized to the victim, and said it had promptly informed the victim’s representative both electronically and by mail. Bene had previously received a conditional release at first instance, which was overturned on appeal after public outcry. He remains sentenced to 11 years and a lifetime ban from practicing medicine.
