Court extends detention of former NKA deputy chief Bús Balázs until Christmas
A court has prolonged the pre-trial custody of former National Cultural Fund deputy chairman Bús Balázs until December 25, citing ongoing suspicion of serious financial misconduct.
The Kecskeméti District Court confirmed the extension of Bús Balázs's detention until Christmas, after agreeing with the Bács-Kiskun County Prosecutor's Office that the allegations of grave financial mismanagement persist. Prosecutors claim that the governing board of the National Cultural Fund approved hundreds of grants in a manner that inflicted a significant fiscal deficit on the government. The probe also implicates former culture minister Hankó Balázs and former state secretary Varga-Bajusz Veronika, whose arrests followed earlier detentions of other senior officials, including Ughy Attila and Krucsainé Herter Anikó.
Investigators say that funds earmarked for cultural projects were diverted to political campaign costs and personal uses. A related inquiry into a documentary-film subsidy exceeding 80 million forints has led to further arrests, such as Fásyné Gurzó Mária, whose pre-trial supervision was ordered in early October.
Why it matters
The case highlights potential large-scale misuse of public cultural funds and the accountability of senior officials.
