Court order puts OU basketball recruit B.J. Edwards' eligibility on hold
A Tennessee appellate court stayed the injunction that had cleared B.J. Edwards to play for Oklahoma, leaving his eligibility unresolved.
The Tennessee Court of Appeals issued an order on Aug. 26 that suspends the injunction previously granted to B.J. Edwards and other athletes, effectively halting his eligibility to compete for the Oklahoma men's basketball program. Edwards, a fifth-year guard who transferred from SMU after a stint at Tennessee, signed with the Sooners on Aug. 13 following a temporary court order that had cleared him to play.
Last season he contributed to SMU’s first 28 games before an injury sidelined him, averaging 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists. The appellate court’s stay pauses the earlier relief until a final ruling is issued, leaving Edwards unable to suit up for now. Coach Porter Moser’s roster, which includes scorers Xzayvier Brown and Derrion Reid, hoped Edwards would help the team return to the NCAA Tournament in his sixth season. The situation remains pending as the legal process continues.
