Court orders removal of contested monument in Székelyudvarhely amid identity dispute
A regional court has instructed Székelyudvarhely's authorities to decide within thirty days whether to dismantle a monument in Emlékezés Park whose subject is disputed.
The Arad Megyei Törvényszék issued a first-instance judgment directing Székelyudvarhely’s local government to adopt a removal resolution for the monument standing in Emlékezés Park within thirty days. The suit was filed by the Antiszemitizmus és Legionárius Mozgalom Elleni Egyesület, asserting that the sculpture portrays the writer Wass Albert, while the city argues it depicts a symbolic wandering Székely, based on written proof from the creator ifj.
Blaskó János. Mayor Szakács-Paál István said the council has contacted the park’s founders and awaits official delivery of the court’s reasoning. The municipality intends to lodge an appeal. The case is linked to the Vexler-törvény, a 2025 amendment targeting extremist symbols, and similar challenges have been raised about a Nyirő József statue in the same park.
