Court upholds five-year prison term for drug-impaired driver responsible for fatal crash

In February of the previous year, a Fiat Ducato driver attempted an overtaking maneuver on the I/52 near the Novomlýnské reservoirs and collided head-on with an oncoming passenger car carrying a married couple, resulting in their deaths from serious injuries. Investigation revealed the driver was under the influence of methamphetamine and amphetamine at the time. The district court in Břeclav sentenced him to five years in prison and a seven-year driving ban for negligent homicide and endangering traffic while intoxicated.

The defendant appealed, arguing for a reduced term, citing his cooperation, apology to the victims’ families, and an offer of financial compensation. The appellate court, however, upheld the original sentence, emphasizing his prior convictions for driving under the influence and a previous traffic accident caused by drug use. The verdict is final.
