Court upholds sentence for mother who used drugs while caring for newborn
A first-instance court confirmed the legality and reasoning of a sentence imposed on a 30-year-old mother who used drugs during pregnancy and whose newborn later died.
The court, represented by spokesperson Eliška Duchková, affirmed that the lower-court ruling was lawful and appropriately justified. Media reports indicated the woman lived in a shelter with her infant and had a history of drug use that was detected at birth. Child-protective services monitored her after the hospital alerted authorities. The prosecution sought a harsher penalty on appeal, while the defence unsuccessfully requested a forensic review and claimed the mother was unaware of any breastfeeding restrictions for drug users.
