COVID-19 cases climb nationwide as new vaccine targeting XFG strain prepares for rollout

COVID-19 infections are increasing across all states, and health experts urge high-risk groups to get the upcoming vaccine aimed at the XFG variant.

Across the United States, COVID-19 case counts are on the upswing, affecting all 50 states. Medical commentator Dr. Omer A. Awan explained that prior infections and vaccinations have lowered the likelihood of severe illness for most Americans, yet older adults, people with diabetes, heart or lung disease, and those on steroids or chemotherapy remain at heightened risk. He advised these groups to consider receiving the forthcoming vaccine, which is designed specifically for the circulating XFG strain, unlike earlier shots that only offer partial protection.

The new formulation is expected to be released within a few weeks. In addition to vaccination, Awan mentioned two antiviral drugs: Xocova, which can be taken after exposure to markedly cut infection risk, and Paxlovid, prescribed for infected individuals who are prone to severe outcomes.

Why it matters

Rising cases and a new variant make timely vaccination and treatment crucial for protecting vulnerable populations.
