COVID-19 Vaccine Linked to Longer Survival in Glioblastoma Patients, Study Finds

A pre-print analysis of 187 glioblastoma patients shows those vaccinated within 100 days before surgery lived roughly twice as long as unvaccinated peers.

A pre-print analysis of 187 glioblastoma cases from 2022-2025 reported that patients who got a COVID-19 vaccine within roughly three months before tumor biopsy or removal survived a median of 743 days, compared with 349 days for those who remained unvaccinated. The effect was observed only for the COVID-19 vaccine, not for other inoculations such as influenza or pneumococcal shots, suggesting a possible mRNA-driven immune activation.

Neurosurgeon James Markert and his team controlled for variables like COVID infection severity and healthcare access, but acknowledged residual confounding. The findings echo earlier work by pediatric oncologist Elias Sayour linking mRNA vaccination to doubled survival in lung cancer and melanoma patients receiving immunotherapy. Researchers speculate the vaccine may either broadly stimulate immunity or teach immune cells to recognize a protein shared by the virus and glioblastoma cells.

Ongoing efforts aim to replicate the results in another cohort and eventually test the vaccine’s impact in a clinical trial. Experts stress that patients should not postpone standard treatments to receive the vaccine, but view the observation as a hopeful lead.
