Covid bereaved families seek justice and a meeting with Andy Burnham

Covid-19 bereaved families have written to the Prime Minister urging action and have asked for a meeting with Andy Burnham to discuss accountability.

Covid-bereaved Families for Justice UK, which counts over 7,000 members nationwide, addressed a letter to the Prime Minister demanding that the government learn from the pandemic and prevent further needless loss. The organization underscored that Covid-19 has claimed over 230,000 lives in the UK, with 5,967 deaths recorded in London during April 2020. In the correspondence, they asked for a meeting with Andy Burnham to discuss how to achieve justice for those affected.

The group criticized what they described as a “toxic” culture in No10 and blamed state austerity and underinvestment for the high death toll. Health Secretary Yvette Cooper replied, expressing sympathy for the families and pointing to the recently published Pandemic Preparedness Strategy as a step toward better future responses.

Why it matters

The appeal highlights ongoing public demand for accountability and reforms after the UK's Covid-19 response.
