CPI(M) and CPI name candidates for West Bengal Nandigram and Rejinagar by-elections

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has fielded Advocate Sayeed Asad Ali as its candidate for the Rejinagar constituency, and the Communist Party of India has nominated Shanti Gopal Giri for Nandigram in the pending West Bengal Legislative Assembly by-elections. These by-polls were triggered by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari relinquishing the Nandigram seat to retain Bhabanipur, and by the resignation of Aam Janata Unnayan Party founder Humayun Kabir from Rejinagar.

The Election Commission of India announced that voting will take place on October 6, with results to be counted on October 9. In addition to the West Bengal contests, the commission also set dates for vacant seats in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and a parliamentary constituency in Assam. West Bengal Congress president Shubhankar Sarkar has publicly rebuked the state government, claiming no development work has been done in Nandigram and that the chief minister should have kept the seat.
