Cracks force partial closure of A15's Suurhoffbrug, traffic rerouted to emergency lane

Rijkswaterstaat announced that cracks discovered in the main girder of the western Suurhoffbrug have rendered the structure unsafe, prompting the closure of its two regular lanes on the A15 and forcing all vehicles onto the emergency lane. The bridge is the main conduit to the Maasvlakte, the hub of Europe's largest container terminals, while traffic in the opposite direction already travels over a temporary arch bridge placed in 2021.

No restrictions apply to maritime traffic below the bridge, and Prorail confirmed that the adjacent railway bridge remains unaffected. Deltalinqs, representing harbour businesses, said the halved capacity will add at least twenty to thirty minutes of delay per truck journey. Built in 1974, the bridge is scheduled for replacement in 2031-32, with a new project now in the planning phase.

Recent closures of other aging bridges, such as the Hardenbergerbrug, highlight a broader issue of deteriorating infrastructure. Ministers Vincent Karremans and Annet Bertram are working on a re-prioritisation of national projects to allocate more funds to maintenance, with decisions expected in the coming weeks.
