A new study shows that juvenile winter-run Chinook salmon survival drops sharply if river temperatures rise during the first 15 days after eggs hatch.
A recent paper in Science Advances reveals that the early developmental window for California's winter-run Chinook salmon is extremely temperature-sensitive, with a 73 % drop in juvenile survival for every 1.8 °F rise in river temperature over the first 15 days. The team combined spawning surveys, temperature models and oxygen-isotope analysis of otoliths to pinpoint which redds produced surviving fish. Findings indicate that only nests experiencing cooler water during this brief period yield juveniles capable of tolerating later warming.
Shasta Dam now blocks access to historic cold-water spawning grounds near Mount Shasta, forcing salmon to spawn in the warmer Sacramento River where water for farms and cities competes with ecological needs.
