Cross-border organ donations give new hope to Romanian transplant patients
The National Transplant Agency reported two recent organ recoveries—one in Iași and another in Veliko Târnovo—that enabled transplants for Romanian recipients.
The National Transplant Agency highlighted two recent cases of organ donation that created life-saving opportunities for Romanian patients. In Iași, a family agreed to donate organs from a 70-year-old brain-dead patient, resulting in two transplants performed at Dr. C I Parhon Clinical Hospital. A day later, a Bulgarian family permitted organ recovery from a 54-year-old donor at Dr. Stephen Cherkezov Hospital in Veliko Târnovo; because no compatible recipients were found in Bulgaria, the kidneys and liver were sent to Romania under a 2021 cooperation agreement.
Three Romanian patients received the grafts—two kidney and one liver transplants—at the Fundeni Clinical Institute. The agency thanked the Bulgarian partners and medical teams for their solidarity and rapid response.
Why it matters
It shows how international cooperation can expand organ-donor pools and save lives.
