Crowdfunded free app aims to swap screen time for outdoor play for UK children
A team of childhood experts and parents has launched a crowdfunding campaign to fund a free app that offers daily outdoor activities for British kids.
A group of childhood specialists and parents has started a Crowdfunder drive to raise a minimum of £10,000 for a new free app that encourages British children to leave their screens for real-world adventures. The campaign benefits from match funding provided by the Aviva Foundation and aims to expand the prototype, already built for iPhone, to Android and web versions. Developed by the Exeter-based community interest company Good Ways, in partnership with developers Good Binary and outdoor experts Outdoor People CIC, the app offers a variety of no-cost activities ranging from five-minute bird-watching tasks to longer nature-reserve projects.
Dan Raven-Ellison, a British explorer and geographer involved in the project, stresses that the app is designed to foster curiosity, creativity and physical activity without points or leaderboards. The team hopes to distribute the adventures through schools nationwide, reaching millions of children regardless of socioeconomic background.
Why it matters
It offers a low-cost, technology-free way to promote outdoor activity and wellbeing for children across the UK.
