Crown Prince Christian makes debut in royal gala uniform during first state visit

Crown Prince Christian attended his inaugural state visit wearing the Royal Guard’s red gala uniform and his newly awarded Grand Cross of the Order of the Dannebrog.

During a gala dinner at Christiansborg Palace, King Frederik and Queen Mary welcomed the Vietnamese president, his spouse, and a business delegation. Crown Prince Christian, who turned 21 on October 15, made his first appearance on a state visit in the Royal Guard’s red gala uniform, proudly showing the Grand Cross of the Order of the Dannebrog awarded by his father. Royal commentator Caroline Vagle pointed out that the order’s inscription had been altered from the prince’s own initials to his father’s before the event.

She described the evening as a vivid display of royal pomp and a step toward the prince’s future role. In addition, Queen Mary debuted a newly re-engineered version of Queen Alexandrine’s sapphire jewelry, a piece that can be worn as a diadem, necklace or brooch. The ceremony underscored both tradition and modernisation within the Danish monarchy.

Why it matters

The event signals the Crown Prince’s growing public role and highlights Denmark’s diplomatic ties with Vietnam.
