Crown seeks destruction of murderer's truck still held by RCMP
The Crown has filed a new forfeiture request to have Curtis Dagenais's 1986 GMC truck, kept in RCMP cold storage, destroyed, while the inmate opposes the move.
Curtis Dagenais, convicted of two first-degree murders and an attempted murder of RCMP officers in 2009, is serving three life terms with parole eligibility after 25 years. His 1986 blue GMC 1500, the vehicle used during the 2006 chase that ended in the officers' deaths, has been stored in cold storage at the RCMP headquarters in Regina for two decades. The Crown, represented by former trial prosecutor Scott Bartlett, has again applied for the truck’s forfeiture and destruction, noting the earlier request slipped through the cracks.
Dagenais, appearing via video from Saskatchewan Penitentiary, rejects the forfeiture, claiming the bullet holes could support an innocence claim and seeking another adjournment to secure counsel. Innocence Canada has declined to represent him, and the judge, Daryl Labach, granted one more postponement, setting the next forfeiture hearing for Aug. 31.
