CRPF says pellet gun use on NEET leak protesters followed SOPs

Following the July 20 crackdown on anti-NEET leak protesters, the CRPF conducted a post-event analysis of its Rapid Action Force unit. The review confirmed that the force followed the prescribed escalation ladder, using public warnings, tear gas and lathi charge before resorting to pump-action pellet guns, which are classified as non-lethal. Injuries were reported among three to five demonstrators and 47 members of the Rapid Action Force, six of whom sustained head wounds.

CRPF Director General G P Singh noted the matter is sub judice and that findings will be presented to the Supreme Court. RAF officials said the police authorized the force, in line with SOPs and existing judicial rulings that permit such measures against violent mobs. An executive magistrate’s order, delegated to the Delhi Police commissioner and junior officers, provided written permission for the use of civil force at the protest sites.
