CRPF Sub-Inspector Found Dead After Self-Inflicted Gunshot at Bijapur Camp

A Central Reserve Police Force sub-inspector shot himself with his service weapon at a camp in Bijapur district and later died in a Sukma field hospital.

On the night between Monday and Tuesday, Sub-Inspector Devanand Yadav of the Central Reserve Police Force's 131st battalion reportedly shot himself with his service weapon at the Mettagudam camp in Bijapur district, Chhattisgarh. Camp colleagues heard the gunshot, provided immediate first aid, and moved him by field ambulance to the Elmagunda camp in Sukma district, where he died during treatment. Authorities have logged the incident as an unnatural death and launched an inquiry to determine why Yadav took his own life.

The officer originated from Karjaha village in Deoria district, Uttar Pradesh. The CRPF remains heavily deployed in South Bastar for anti-Maoist operations, a region declared free of the insurgency earlier this year. Over the past eight years, nearly 200 police and paramilitary personnel have died by suicide in the state, citing personal and health-related issues.

Why it matters

The suicide highlights mental-health stresses among security forces deployed in India's conflict-prone Bastar region.
