Crumbl shuts down dozens of stores as sales plunge, including seven in California

Dessert chain Crumbl has closed 57 U.S. locations this year, with seven stores in California shutting their doors amid a sharp sales decline.

Crumbl, the fast-growing cookie franchise that surged during the pandemic, is closing a wave of locations after a steep decline in sales. According to a RestaurantBusiness report, the company has shuttered 57 stores nationwide in 2026, including seven in California such as those in Paso Robles and Cupertino. Traffic to its shops fell 32% year-over-year in August, and overall sales were 70% lower than in August two years prior.

At least 55 franchise sites are now on the market. The brand, founded in 2017 by cousins Sawyer Hemsley and Jason McGowan, once sold nearly a million cookies daily and expanded to over 1,000 stores by 2024. In May, the founders announced they would relinquish their CEO and brand officer positions while staying on the board to guide the company's long-term vision. Crumbl now operates only 20 stores in California.

Why it matters

The closures signal a major slowdown for a once-rapidly expanding dessert chain, affecting franchisees and local job markets.
