Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Secure Global Rights to Makoto Shinkai's Next Film
Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures have obtained worldwide distribution rights, except for Asia, to Makoto Shinkai’s upcoming untitled anime feature.
Crunchyroll confirmed that it will share global distribution duties with Sony Pictures Entertainment for the as-yet-untitled anime film by director Makoto Shinkai, covering every region except Asia, while India is treated as part of the Western rollout. The company said no information on the project’s name, plot or launch window has been released. Shinkai, a leading figure in anime cinema, previously delivered blockbusters such as Your Name, Weathering With You and Suzume, each grossing well over $100 million worldwide.
His films have consistently ranked among the top-earning anime titles. The new distribution arrangement mirrors the strategy used for Suzume, which also saw a joint Crunchyroll-Sony Pictures release. Shinkai hinted earlier this year that concrete details would emerge later in the year, fueling fan excitement.
Why it matters
The deal expands Crunchyroll’s role as a leading Western distributor of Japanese animation.
