Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson placed on injured list after oblique strain
Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson left Sunday’s game with left-side discomfort that was later identified as an oblique injury and was placed on the 10-day IL.
In the third inning of the Cubs’ 11-4 defeat by the St. Louis Cardinals, shortstop Dansby Swanson was struck by a 96 mph fastball and immediately showed signs of pain, discarding his helmet and leaning forward. After a brief assessment by the training staff, he left the field and later was diagnosed with an oblique injury, which the team initially reported as left-side discomfort. Manager Craig Counsell announced that Swanson would be placed on the 10-day injured list and will receive an MRI to gauge the severity. Depending on the scan results, the strain could keep him sidelined for as long as a month, a blow to the Cubs as they battle the Milwaukee Brewers for the NL Central lead.
Why it matters
Swanson’s absence could affect the Cubs’ chances in a tight NL Central race.
