Customs seize gold bars worth over ₹2.08 crore, arrest two travelers in Chennai
Customs officials confiscated gold bars valued at more than ₹2.08 crore from two Indian nationals arriving from Singapore and placed them in custody.
Acting on intelligence, Chennai Customs’ air intelligence unit intercepted two Indian travelers arriving from Singapore at Chennai International Airport on Sunday. The pair had concealed three oval-shaped capsules containing a yellow paste inside their bodies; after extraction and processing the material produced two gold ingots of 924 grams and 731 grams, valued at more than ₹2.08 crore in the global market. The gold was seized under Section 110 of the Customs Act, 1962, and the passengers were arrested.
Chennai International Airport Joint Commissioner K M Guru Rajesh cautioned that smuggling syndicates often lure travelers with free trips and promises of easy money, urging vigilance. He also warned that such concealed capsules pose serious health risks, including potentially fatal internal injuries. Investigation into the case continues.
