Cyber breach at Hachette's Australian distributor disrupts book supply chain

Hachette Australia's subsidiary Alliance Distribution Services suffered a cyber intrusion on July 18, causing a severe slowdown in the distribution of its titles. The outage has left independent bookstores, including Mary Martin Bookshop in Melbourne, unable to restock shelves ahead of the busy Christmas period, and has forced authors such as Danielle Binks to postpone school visits and book signings. Writer Maxine Beneba Clarke highlighted the financial blow to authors, while Hachette acknowledged the problem and pledged to restore full operations securely, though no completion date was offered.
The company has advised retailers to source books from alternatives like Booktopia or overseas suppliers, which may raise costs. Cyber-security specialist Matthew Warren of RMIT University speculated the attack could be ransomware-related and warned that AI may increase the frequency of such breaches. Industry participants are urging patience and continued support for local booksellers amid the ongoing supply challenges.
