Cyborg cockroaches equipped with tiny syringes may aid future disaster rescues
Researchers have created six-legged cockroach robots that can navigate rubble and deliver medical injections to trapped victims.
A team of biorobotics engineers from the University of Queensland and the University of New South Wales has developed a new class of cyborg insects for disaster response. By attaching lightweight electronics, cameras and a custom auto-injection system to the giant burrowing cockroach (Macropanesthia rhinoceros), the researchers created “paraborgs” capable of entering narrow, debris-filled spaces. Tests showed a 95 % success rate for close-range injections and a 72 % overall success rate for combined navigation and delivery.
The project’s lead, Thang Vo-Doan, stresses that medical decisions remain under human control, while PhD candidate Hai Nhan Le highlighted the challenge of precise positioning. Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Tim Hassiotis sees the technology as a potential new tool for rescuers, and the team hopes to field swarms of specialized insects within five to ten years.
