Cyclone Wati submerges Aitutaki's upgraded marina causeway, damaging key port
Tropical Cyclone Wati has flooded the newly upgraded Arutanga Harbour causeway on Aitutaki, leaving the island’s main port partially destroyed.
Cyclone Wati swept across the Southern Cook Islands, inundating the Arutanga Harbour and Marina causeway on Aitutaki, which had recently received more than $7 million in reinforcement work. Mayor Nick Henry said the structure was discovered underwater and that half of it might have collapsed back into the basin, prompting a need for dredging. The Cook Islands Investment Corporation highlighted the harbour’s role as the island’s vital conduit for food, fuel and other essentials.
While minor damage to vessels and some buildings was observed, no injuries have been reported as of mid-afternoon. Henry indicated that aid has been requested from Rarotonga and that officials will first document the damage before commencing repairs. The Cook Islands Meteorological Office warned of continued heavy swells and a high chance of coastal flooding.
Why it matters
Aitutaki’s main supply route is compromised, threatening food, fuel and essential imports for the island.
