Cyprus anti-corruption body to announce findings on WiSpear black-van case
The anti-corruption authority will release an announcement on the WiSpear surveillance van investigation on Monday.
During a parliamentary committee hearing, anti-corruption commissioner Haris Poyiadjis announced that the authority will publish an update on the WiSpear ‘black van’ surveillance case on Monday. The call for a fresh review comes from Akel MP Constantinos Constantinou and opposition MP Irene Charalambides, who say the original closure was insufficiently explained and that reopening would bolster public trust. The case originated in 2019 when police investigated WiSpear after its former CEO Tal Dilian promoted a converted ambulance capable of intercepting communications.
WiSpear later pleaded guilty to personal data breaches and was fined €76,000. Greek courts recently convicted Dilian and three others for illegal spyware use, prompting renewed calls in Cyprus to re-examine the matter. Officials also discussed pending legislation to strengthen the anti-corruption authority’s powers and improve whistleblower protections.
