Cyprus President Christodoulides Accuses Erdogan of Supreme Hypocrisy Over Cyprus

At the United Nations General Assembly, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides denounced Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s references to international law as “hypocrisy of the highest form,” arguing that Turkey’s actions in Cyprus run counter to those principles. He reminded the audience that the UN Security Council has defined a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality as the only viable solution and called for a revival of talks halted in 2017.

Christodoulides stressed that the island’s division has caused decades of displacement, with Varosha remaining sealed and families of missing persons still suffering. He appealed to Turkish Cypriots to envision a shared future and urged Erdogan to grant permission for substantive negotiations within the UN framework. The president also linked the Cyprus issue to broader concerns about consistent application of international law, especially for small states that rely on multilateral rules for security and sovereignty.
