Cyprus ranks near bottom of EU renewable electricity share despite sunny climate
Eurostat data shows Cyprus placed fourth from last among EU members for renewable electricity generation in Q2 2026, even though solar power dominates its mix.
Eurostat's latest report places Cyprus fourth from the bottom of the EU ranking for renewable electricity generation in the second quarter of 2026, trailing only France, Malta, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The EU overall saw renewable sources provide 54.1 percent of electricity, a slight dip from the previous year, with solar representing 41.6 percent of that total, up from 37.0 percent. Wind and hydropower contributed 27.7 percent and 22.6 percent respectively, while combustible renewable fuels made up 7.7 percent.
Latvia, Denmark and Croatia topped the list with renewable shares above 90 percent, whereas Slovakia recorded the lowest at 19.8 percent. In Cyprus, July 2026 data show solar supplied 26.27 percent of net electricity, wind 3.24 percent and combustible renewables 0.46 percent, bringing the combined renewable share to just under 30 percent for the month.
