Czech gas storage fill rate slows sharply as winter approaches

Czech gas storage facilities are being filled at a much slower pace than earlier in the year, with daily inflows now lower than outflows on some days.

Early October saw Czech gas storage facilities experience a net outflow, with daily withdrawals exceeding injections on at least one occasion. Subsequent days showed a modest rebound, yet the refill rate stays far below that of Germany, France and Austria, placing the Czech Republic near the bottom of European rankings. According to AGSI statistics, storage levels sit around three-quarters of capacity, but daily changes are negligible.

Energy analyst Jiří Gavor stresses that contemporary gas storage operates flexibly throughout the year, with market participants sometimes withdrawing gas for price arbitrage. While overall storage is still increasing, the pace lags behind most neighbours, except Poland, which is nearly full. The slower refill comes as the heating season begins, raising concerns about future supply adequacy.

Why it matters

Slower gas storage refilling could affect Czech energy security as winter demand rises.
