Czech lawmakers debate tougher penalties for unpaid child support and murder statute of limitations

In a special parliamentary meeting, legislators examined a suite of amendments aimed at strengthening protection for children and single-parent households. The primary bill would allow up to two years of imprisonment for individuals who fail to pay child support for over four months, and up to one year for deliberate neglect extending beyond a third of a year, with courts able to impose unconditional sentences when societal protection demands it.

Parallel proposals seek to re-introduce the non-prescription of murder and to raise minimum sentences for domestic violence and animal abuse to at least one year. Lawmakers also introduced measures targeting illegal work, expanding the offence of pimping, and creating a specific crime for unjustified killing of cats or dogs. More than twenty amendment motions have been filed, covering changes to the child-care certificate system and other criminal law provisions.
