Czech Prime Minister Babiš Hosts Slovak PM Fico for Friendship Statue Unveiling

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš welcomed Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico to unveil a new friendship statue and deliver speeches at the Government Office.

On the eve of the Czechoslovak independence anniversary, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš will host Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico for the unveiling of a friendship monument at the Government Office, where both will address the gathering. The event marks a thaw in ties that soured under the former Czech administration, which criticized Slovakia's foreign policy, especially its support for Russia and its stance on Ukraine.

Recently, Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár traveled to Moscow for talks with Sergej Lavrov, stating that communication with the Russian Federation remains necessary. Czech-Slovak governmental dialogue resumed in March with a meeting in Nová Horka, the first in three years. Earlier, Babiš had visited Slovakia on his first foreign trip after taking office. The leaders also continue to meet within the V4 framework.

Why it matters

The meeting signals a renewal of Czech-Slovak cooperation after a period of diplomatic tension.
