Czech Republic moves to tighten notification rules for Russian diplomats
The Czech foreign ministry confirmed plans to tighten the notification regime for Russian diplomats, mirroring EU requirements and addressing security concerns.
Adam Čörgö, spokesperson for the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that the state is preparing to amend the notification procedures for Russian diplomats operating in the Czech Republic. The move follows a promise by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, made after opposition remarks, to introduce a more rigorous regime. Petr Macinka, the foreign minister, announced in early September that his ministry, in cooperation with the Security Information Service, is working on a draft to adjust the notification system so it better matches the needs of Czech authorities.
The proposal seeks reciprocity, reflecting the EU rule that obliges Russian diplomatic personnel to inform host states of travel to other EU members. By tightening the process, the Czech government aims to enhance monitoring of diplomatic movements and address concerns that Russian intelligence may exploit diplomatic cover.
