Dangote Refinery to Launch $5 Billion IPO, Targeting Massive Expansion

Aliko Dangote announced that his refinery will seek $5 billion in an upcoming IPO, which could become Africa’s largest public offering.

The owner of Nigeria’s flagship refinery said the company plans to raise $5 billion through an initial public offering slated for this month. The proceeds are intended to more than double the plant’s output, pushing it to about 1.4% of global refining capacity. If successful, the float would be the biggest ever on the continent. The International Energy Agency’s chief noted that such financing could spur a surge in energy investment across Nigeria. A second Dangote-backed megarefinery is also being prepared in Kenya.

Why it matters

The IPO could unlock unprecedented capital for Africa’s energy infrastructure and set a new benchmark for continental capital markets.
